HANDS Disaster Relief Responds to Nepal Earthquake

HAIAP Network Partner HANDS has responded with assistance for Nepal after the massive earthquake on April 25.
Introduction of HANDS Disaster Management Program:
Disaster management aims to reduce, or avoid the potential losses from hazards, assure prompt and appropriate assistance to victims of Disaster, and achieve rapid and effective recovery. Appropriate actions at all points lead to greater preparedness, better warnings, reduced vulnerability or the prevention of Disasters. The complete disaster Management cycle includes the shaping of public policies and plans that either modify the causes of Disasters or mitigate their effects on people, property and infrastructure.
Situation Analysis and Response
The HANDS team with support and facilitation of local partner organization ECCA conducted a quick situation analysis. The process includes the information sharing by the ECCA team, field visits observation, information from the local government authorities and the local resident communities. The areas so far covered are Khokana and Bangumati, which are peri-urban slums of Patan city in Lalitpur district. These are thickly populated areas, comprised of mostly old buildings and houses. The rural area observed was Dalchoki, which is a Village Development Committee (VCD) of district Lalitpur.
Targets for emergency interventions were identified and HANDS responded in the areas of shelter, lighting, water supply and purification, food supply and medical management and supplies.
